A marriage of colour conveying a message of strength and hopefulness that is both enduring and uplifting.

This is only the second time in over 20 years that Pantone has picked two ‘Colors of the Year’ instead of one. The first time was in 2016 when Rose Quartz and Serenity were selected. While Rose Quartz and Serenity were meant to be merged into one another, for this year’s choices, Pantone emphasized that Ultimate Gray and Illuminating are two independent but complementary colours that express our conflicting moods
For all us colour addicts out there, this announcement is quite an exciting milestone in the year! It also dictates so many decisions for the year ahead!
The American colour forecasting company Pantone have a panel of experts who carefully select the colour each year! Not a job I would like to do, to be fair! These experts undertake a comprehensive analysis of literally everything; the atmosphere & climate, observing catwalks, studying social trends, movies and fashion in travel amongst other things! It is true art!
For this year, the colour of choice has been announced as Pantone 17-5104 Ultimate Grey & Pantone 13-0647 Illuminating. The decision is based upon “two independent colours that highlight how different elements come together to support one another, best express the mood for Pantone Color of the Year 2021. Practical and rock-solid but at the same time warming and optimistic, the union of PANTONE 17-5104 Ultimate Gray + PANTONE 13-0647 Illuminating is one of strength and positivity. It is a story of colour that encapsulates deeper feelings of thoughtfulness with the promise of something sunny and friendly”.

I am not sure I really understand what they mean by that, but ultimately, this combination is simple and elegant!

Pantone 13-0647 Illuminating
This bright, cheerful and friendly yellow colour cheers up, inspires hope and evokes the most pleasant emotions and associations. It is as if it is filled with the sun and vital energy that you can get warm under and share it with others.
Pantone 17-5104 Ultimate Grey
The Color Institute associates grey colour with the pebbles on the beach that stand the test of time no matter what. Strength, confidence and reliability are what the world desperately needs to get back on track in our turbulent times.

Brightly coloured coats are always a great addition to your wardrobe and an easy way to add a pop of colour to your outfit. You can easily style these 2 colours together by wearing grey trousers or jeans with a beautiful bright yellow coat and a white shirt.

Speaking of black…it looks great worn with these 2 colors. It’s a nice way to bring them both together, complementing the gray and contrasting with the yellow. You can try a gray coat if yellow is too much for you, being the main statement.
