Tell us more about yourself…
I’m 53, I’m a mum to two grown-up children, my daughter is away at university and my son is about to move out and buy his first home! I live with my husband of 30 years in a cottage in the woods just outside Marlow and we have two really cute westie dogs. I write my blog Fifty & Fab which is like a hobby rather than a job, I started it when I was approaching 50 as I wanted to get some accountability for exercise and healthy eating and it has evolved into a lifestyle blog with a focus on style, health, fitness, menopause and anything I am doing to feel fabulous in midlife! I share ideas and inspiration.
Who are your style icons & why?
Jennifer Aniston she just always looks so effortlessly cool and of course amazing for her age! And I love the Duchess of Cambridge, her classic style but also her confidence and poise, I also love how she mixes high street and designer.
How would you describe your personal style?
I prefer classic, timeless, simple style. I have yet to master my own personal style if I am honest, it is still a work in progress, what I aspire to and what I actually achieve are still pretty far apart. But being well turned out, suitably dressed for every occasion and smart are really important to me. I have to iron everything and I don’t do messy! I was listening to a podcast recently with Elizabeth Hurley and she was saying how she tends to wear a daily ‘uniform’ of jeans and jumpers and I really like that idea. If I could find the perfect jeans and the perfect cashmere … or would I get bored!!?
How do you decide what to wear?
It is based on so many factors! First of all, what am I doing that day (out and about or at home), then I consider the weather (I hate being too cold or too hot). Do I need to dress up a bit or am I just running around doing errands? I try to keep my wardrobe pretty simple but I still complicate it and can’t decide what to wear! If I’m heading into London or shopping then I always start with the right shoes and work up!
What’s the best piece of style wisdom you’ve ever received?
I’d rather be overdressed than underdressed, I guess that advice must have come from somewhere. I love the Coco Chanel quote ‘before you leave the house, look in the mirror and remove one accessory’. I don’t always do this but I like the sentiment that it is important to get it just right and not over adorn!
Do you have a signature piece or style?
I always wear a scarf. And I rarely buy an outfit without deciding on the right scarf, whether it be one I already have or I choose a new one. I wear them less in the summer but then I will use my lighter weight scarves as a sarong/beach cover-up or just to have as a wrap if I am in a summer dress and it might turn cool. I love dresses but I am not keen on shift dresses, I love something with a waist and a fuller skirt, I find these suit my petite shape and small waist. I had a fantastic style consultation with Jo Haley last year and it really helped me understand why I suit certain shapes.
What is your secret to great style?
Confidence! Although I don’t always get that right like everyone I struggle some days, but honestly I do think we need to embrace what we have been given and be more confident.
What is the most important item you spend money on?
My wardrobe and my style are really important to me, getting it right and feeling good gives me confidence but I don’t always spend huge amounts. I do have ‘investment items’ like a Louis Vuitton handbag or a pair of 7 for all Mankind jeans, but equally a good coat purchased in the sale from Boden can last and last so I mix it up. Last year I treated myself to two (yeah two) Gucci belts which I absolutely love. I wear them with jeans or to cinch in my waist in a dress.
What is your current style obsession?
Well, I have found my winter wardrobe this year a bit uninspiring and I have been struggling if I am honest. But as soon as the weather gets warmer my obsession includes summer dresses and bikinis! At the moment though I am searching out lightweight knitwear to see me through and inject some enthusiasm into my style. But I think ‘colour’ is my current obsession – particularly red or pale dusky pink – I love adding a pop of colour to an otherwise plain outfit. Now I have my Instagram grid I can see if I am wearing ‘colour’ or not and then I adjust accordingly if I have had too many grey days. I also use my Instagram to remind me of what outfits I loved and what worked well.
What is your favourite fashion accessory or piece of jewellery & why?
I am loving that I can wear a dress with trainers! This was originally so against what I’d been taught about style and it took me a while to embrace it but now I love it, it means dresses are no longer formal but can be dressed up or down. I also love my Nomination charm bracelet, a friend introduced me to Nomination a few years ago and I now have a full bracelet with each charm having sentimental meaning. I love a bracelet stack – just keep piling them on!
