Update your style game and add some ‘Classic Blue’ outfits to your winter wardrobe.
It’s Pantone’s 2020 Colour of the Year!
For all us colour addicts out there, this announcement is quite an exciting milestone in the year! It also dictates so many decisions for the year ahead!
The American colour forecasting company Pantone have a panel of experts who carefully select the colour each year! Not a job I would like to do, to be fair! These experts undertake a comprehensive analysis of literally everything; the atmosphere & climate, observing catwalks, studying social trends, movies and fashion in travel amongst other things! It is true art!
For this year, the colour of choice has been announced as Pantone 19-4502 Classic Blue. Pantone advises us that this colour “symbolises protection, stability, peace and confidence. It encourages open mindfulness, deep thinking and communication. This calming hue is imprinted in our minds as restful and tranquil to the human spirit, offering refuge in difficult times and re-centring the mind in times of confusion”.
I am not sure I really understand what they mean by that, but ultimately, Classic Blue is simple and elegant! And because it’s a little more muted than colours from previous years, it’s an easy relatable colour.
Classic Blue is all around us. It’s the infinite shade of the evening sky! The contemplative colour of the ocean and that burst of blue in berries at breakfast. And so, Pantone believes there’s no better time than 2020 to highlight this evocative colour.
Think rich blue early evening sky before it darkens to Dior’s midnight and you’ve got Classic Blue!
But back down to earth. How will we work this hue into our wardrobes?
Depending on your personal colour family, the choices will vary.
Your colour family is one of 4 seasons; Spring, Summer, Autumn or Winter. To find out your season it is best to undergo a full Colour Analysis.
(P.S. I will write another blog about this soon!)
Your colour family determines which colours of clothing and makeup shades harmonise with your skin complexion, eye colour, and hair colour.
But to keep things simple for now; if you do know your colour family, here is what lies ahead for 2020:
Lots of fun will be (literally) in store for Springs as Classic Blue sits between Bright Blue and Navy. It works with everything except their browns. Cool Springs will excel in this hue.
It’s delightful for Summers too! Classic Blue, close to Delft on the colour wheel and Cornflower can be teamed with reds, greens or pinks. Or blended in a chic monochrome look with other blues.
Classic Blue sits close to Autumn’s Heliotrope, such a gorgeous shade of purple, so cool Autumns will wear it well.
Winters, this is me too, so great news! Brighter versions related to Royal and Cobalt Blues will give wonderful opportunities for contrast with all the neutrals and colours.
Still with me?
If you are still unsure of how to bring this colour into your wardrobe, here are a few tips:
Use it as an accent colour with light neutrals
If you’re new to using colour, it’s best to start introducing Classic Blue in small doses.
Inject a playful, summery feel to your wardrobe. Simply add a few simple accessories, like earrings, a pendant necklace or perhaps a lightweight scarf, with accent hints.
Blue and white go hand in hand which makes it easy to match Classic Blue accessories with light neutral shades
With a statement outfit
Classic Blue is a bold, versatile colour to wear. Bodysuits and jumpsuits are an easy way to make a big statement with this fun colour trend.
And then just accessorise with simple, elegant pieces to enhance your look.
Pairing blue with other bright colours.
You’ll never go wrong when pairing Classic Blue with crisp whites and creamy ivory tones, but how do you put a vibrant, eclectic spin on it? Colour blocking is the way!
Classic Blue packs a punch when colour blocked with bright, contrasting colours.
If you want to take it a step further, think pink.
